National Semiconductor and Sun Microsystems Collaborate on New Mixed-Signal Gigabit Networking Chip for Sun's GigaSwift Ethernet Product Line

Device Integrates Sun's Gigabit Ethernet Controller With National Semiconductor's Analog Gigabit PHY, Enabling Sun to Deliver Enhanced Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Semiconductor Corporation today introduced a high-performance, mixed-signal networking chip designed for Sun Microsystems' GigaSwift Ethernet product line. Designed in collaboration with Sun, the chip integrates National's Gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY), the GigPHYTER(TM) core, and Sun's high-performance Gigabit Ethernet controller. This integration enables Sun to enhance the performance of its GigaSwift networking products while reducing power consumption and overall system costs.

The GigPHYTER core leverages National's heritage in innovative analog design for the communications market. As a proven worldwide supplier of analog and mixed-signal technology, National enables partners such as Sun to focus on developing their unique digital intellectual property for customers. The collaboration with National enables Sun to concentrate resources on adding security, availability and performance features to its GigaSwift Ethernet product line. Sun's GigaSwift Ethernet adapter line now features Jumbo Frames and Sun Trunking 1.3 support, as well as other enhancements to reduce system processing overhead.

"Sun's networking products are used in data center applications where reliability is crucial and legacy products must be seamlessly upgradeable. This new networking chip provides complete compatibility with the Solaris operating system," said Raju Penumatcha, senior director, Network & Security Products Group at Sun Microsystems. "Because of Sun's work with National Semiconductor, we can integrate this chip into our products without having to worry about software compatibility or driver reliability issues."

"This collaboration shows how National Semiconductor, the premier analog company, works with companies serving the communications market. Our experience with analog building blocks and mixed-signal integration allowed us to help Sun produce a high-performance solution that reduces power consumption and system costs for Sun's customers," said Mike Noonen, vice president of National Semiconductor's PC and Networking Group.
